Bremen IT Company Participates in Consultation of the Federal Ministry of the Interior for Home Affairs (BMI) of an eIDAS 2.0 Compliant Infrastructure
Bremen, June 2023
An electronic identity that exploits the overall economic potential: at the beginning of June, the Federal Ministry of the Interior and for Home Affairs (BMI) presented a discussion paper on the development of an infrastructure for digital identities in Germany and invited representatives of stakeholders and interest groups from areas such as data protection, data security, IT security, civil rights, open source and many more to take part in an open and participatory architecture process. Based on the discussion paper, the Bremen-based IT company Governikus submitted a position paper highlighting the strengths and potential of a state identity.
Cooperation between government and private sector actors
Since its foundation, Governikus has stood for transparency, the protection of personal data and informational self-determination. As the developer of an eID server in use throughout Germany on behalf of the (German) Federal Government and the federal states, as well as the AusweisApp2 on behalf of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), the company sees clear strengths and potential in the German eID infrastructure. "We are very pleased that the BMI is inviting an open and, above all, public discourse on a wallet concept, not only taking into account the needs of citizens, government and private sector organizations, but also calling for active participation. We at Governikus see enormous potential in an eIDAS revision to supplement the existing eID system with a Europe-wide basis for secure digitalization," says Hartje Bruns, Director Products for Secure Identities at Governikus. As a developer of successful open source administrative projects, the IT company would like to make its contribution to the developments in the context of eIDAS 2.0 and participate in the development process of a concept for a prototype EUdi wallet. "We are certain that our experience in the areas of online ID function, eIDAS, SDG implementation, the once-only principle and many other EU projects will make us a helpful partner," continues Bruns.
On July 14, 2023, the public announcement of the evaluated position papers and announcement of the submitters will take place by the BMI. From the end of July, workshops will be held with representatives of stakeholders and interest groups, the results of which will be presented on November 30, 2023.
