IDApp2 of the federal government

21.06.2018 - The federal government's AusweisApp2 for using the online ID function has once again been certified by the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI). The current certification covers the Windows, macOS and Android operating systems. Furthermore, the eID kernel, on which the versions for all operating systems are based, has been certified separately. Service providers therefore have the option of using a BSI-certified kernel of the federal government's AusweisApp2 when integrating it into their own apps. Version 1.14.2 of AusweisApp2, published on 21.06.2018, also supports so-called "on-site reading".

On-site readout

The law passed last year to promote electronic proof of identity is the basis for a further functionality of the AusweisApp2, the so-called on-site readout. This makes it possible to carry out legitimation checks and transfer data to forms without using the online ID function of the ID card. With a corresponding authorization certificate, service providers, such as branch banks or authorities, can read the data on the chip after personally comparing the photo with the consent of the ID card holder and using the CAN (access number) printed on the ID document. No activation of the online ID function is required for this. "Uncomplicated legitimation checks and the fast transfer of correct data from forms are essential in many business transactions. Being able to directly read out officially confirmed data and transfer it into the process chain saves time and increases data quality," says Dr. Stephan Klein, Managing Director of Governikus.

Smartphone as card reader

The functionality to use an NFC-enabled Android smartphone as a card reader was made available at the end of last year. An overview of which devices are suitable for using the stationary AusweisApp2 with a paired mobile device can be found on the federal government's AusweisApp2 portal at www.ausweisapp.the (German) Federal Government.de/mobile-geraete/. This has recently been revised and offers end users a convenient overview. An explanatory video on pairing provides support for users.
