Male-dominated IT sector: time to change that

Gone are the days when girls did an apprenticeship in retail and boys did an apprenticeship in a craft business - at first glance, this may seem to be the prevailing opinion in the wake of gender equality. Unfortunately, however, the reality is quite different, especially in the so-called "male domain of IT". And yet the IT sector stands for innovation. A certain discrepancy can still be seen at Governikus:

Two students
Lena and Hella

There are currently only 90 women working in our company, out of 300 employees. We say: there is room for more! Governikus has set itself the goal of equal opportunities for women and men. In addition to implementing equal opportunities, the main focus is on promoting women.

A step towards more women in IT and at Governikus has now been taken: as of today, two female students, Lena and Hella, from the "International Women's Study Program in Computer Science" at Bremen University of Applied Sciences, are completing their practical phases with us for the first time.

Cooperation with Bremen University of Applied Sciences

In order to encourage more women to study computer science, the universities of Bremen and Berlin have been offering computer science courses for 25 years in which women study, for example, "Computer Science and Business". We are proud that we can now be part of the special international women's degree program "Computer Science" in cooperation with Bremen University of Applied Sciences. It is characterized by its varied, dual structure. The theoretical phases at the university now alternate with practical phases in various teams at Governikus. This is followed by a mandatory semester abroad, during which the students spend time at a foreign university. Finally, on their return to Germany, they write their final thesis at Governikus. To make it as easy as possible to get started, no prior knowledge is required for the course.

Practical entry into the "male domain of IT"

Our female students start with a 10-week practical phase in the IT Service team. Here they get to know our product range. They then spend their second year of study in practical software development. In the following year, the students can set their own focus for their studies and their professional future or develop their interests in other areas of Governikus. This is followed by a semester abroad before completing their studies with a Bachelor's thesis at our company.

One thing is certain: Networking, female role models and practical insights are the most important factors in inspiring young women to enter the world of IT. We are very much looking forward to spending time with our two new colleagues and would like to welcome them to Governikus!
