In our blog series "A day as ...", we introduce colleagues from all areas of Governikus. This week we continue with Selin Kiziloglu from Accounting. Selin joined Governikus as a trainee in 2018 and has been working as a financial accountant in the Finance team since 2021.
How was your start at Governikus, Selin?
Before my apprenticeship, I completed my vocational baccalaureate and had no real knowledge of accounting at the time. In 2018, I started my apprenticeship as an office management assistant, which I successfully completed after 2.5 years. During this time, I was able to get a taste of all administrative areas at Govenikus. However, my focus was on the Finance and HR teams, where I was particularly interested in accounting. "Learning on the job" and further training after my apprenticeship to become a financial accountant prepared me perfectly for my future tasks.
What qualifications do potential applicants need for an apprenticeship and for working in financial accounting?
A good understanding of numbers is the most important thing! Diligence and accuracy are other skills that make the work easier. The guaranteed employment for two years after graduation also spoke in favor of training at Governikus.
What are your main tasks at Governikus?
I currently work in accounts receivable and accounts payable. Basically, I write, post and send invoices, process incoming invoices and post the daily bank transactions. I also check the cash balance of all branches and support all tasks relating to the annual financial statements.
The main task of accounting is also to prepare financial reports to help company managers and shareholders make informed business decisions. So, apart from the tasks I work on, our team does a lot more.
What does a typical working day look like for you?
I always start the morning by going through my open emails and updating my to-do list. Then I like to deal with all matters relating to transactions with the bank. We divide up this task in the team and I have my fixed days here. Otherwise, I work on the tasks mentioned above when I'm not in Zoom meetings.
On my office days, I focus on the tasks that I can't do from my home office. This includes, for example, going through and processing the previous day's mail, sending approved outgoing invoices to our customers or preparing the payment run. The exchange with other teams is very important here so that we can ensure a smooth process in financial accounting.
